15/03/10 - IMPORTANT NEWS REGARDING KHV

The club would like to make members aware that we have been made aware that there have been possible outbreaks of KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) in lakes that are local to the club.

The KHV virus is highly contageous and deadly to the carp species, and can typically kill 4 out of 5 fish it infects. If our fish stocks became infecte,d the effects would be devastating as there is no known cure for this disease.

In an attempt to reduce th risk of our waters becoming infected with the KHV virus, the club are purchasing 90 keepnets and 30 landing nets for all matches held on Long Lake (it is believed that carp which are stocked in to commercial type fisheries are more likely to contain the virus, and as a result the match scene is a prime target for transporting the virus). Providing this facility for the entire complex is just not feasible.

Also, all members are urged to ensure that all nets, matts and slings are thoroughly dry when arriving on the complex. If at all possible, these items of tackle should be dry for at least 48hours prior to arrival. Drying in direct sunlight is the preferred method of drying out tackle.

For further information on the KHV virus, please visit the CEFAS website as well as reading these useful advice notes produced by the Environment Agency:
